My 2025 research centred on the evolution of Japan's energy transition strategy. The global shift towards sustainable energy prompted Japan to articulate its decarbonisation ambitions in the early 2020s. However, the geopolitical repercussions of the Russian–Ukrainian war created new strategic pressures, necessitating a recalibration of Japan's approach to the energy transition. In this context, Japan has redefined energy security, broadening its focus from the traditional concern with securing fossil fuel supplies to a more comprehensive emphasis on energy ‑ transition resources and supply ‑ chain resilience. The contemporary framing of energy transition integrates greentech policy with the pursuit of sustained socio ‑ economic development.

The research employs qualitative text ‑ analysis methods to examine key policy documents, identifying recurring themes and tracing their evolution over time. The study offers a nuanced interpretation of Japan 's energy transition strategy and contributes to scholarly understanding of the underlying dynamics shaping its trajectory.
