研究成果概要

This research project provides a detailed analysis of Johann Christoph Unzer’s epistolary novel Geschichte der Brüder des grünen Bundes(1782), a work that, despite its critical acclaim in the late Enlightenment, has received limited scholarly attention in recent decades. The novel, praised by contemporaries such as Wieland and Eschenburg, stands out for its innovative narrative techniques and its engagement with themes of fraternity, intellectual exchange, and existential questioning. By examining Unzer’s work in the context of the Radical Enlightenment and Sturm und Drang, this study sheds new light on a neglected yet significant literary figure.

Key Findings: 1. Literary Innovation and Narrative Technique

Unzer’s novel transcends the conventions of the epistolary form, employing free indirect discourse, thereby pushing the boundaries of narrative experimentation in the late Enlightenment.

Unlike the title suggests, the novel is not a tale of secret alliances but a multi-layered exploration of intellectual and emotional bonds among young men who reunite after their school years, deepening their connections at university.

The novel’s structure and style reflect a deliberate departure from Goethe’s Werther, engaging with its themes while expanding them in both form and content.

2. Biographical and Philosophical Underpinnings

The protagonist’s fate, particularly his death scene, draws striking parallels to the life and death of Unzer’s brother, Ludwig August Unzer, who died of tuberculosis in 1774. The novel’s resolution of existential doubt—rooted in skepticism toward Christian faith—mirrors the elder Unzer’s philosophical convictions, as documented in the novel’s edition.

The novel serves as a key text for understanding the intellectual and literary milieu of the Sturm und Drang era, offering insights into a world that, while contemporaneous with Goethe and Schiller, remained overshadowed by their dominance.

3. Contextualizing Unzer in the Radical Enlightenment

Recent scholarship has increasingly recognized the Unzer brothers as central figures in the German-language Radical Enlightenment, aligning them with the philosophical circle around Jakob Mauvillon.

This research contributes to ongoing discussions about the Radical Enlightenment’s influence on literature, particularly in challenging orthodox religious and political structures.

This project not only reaffirms the literary and philosophical significance of Johann Christoph Unzer’s Geschichte der Brüder des grünen Bundes but also positions it within the broader context of the Radical Enlightenment. By revisiting this overlooked work, the study highlights the innovative narrative techniques and existential themes that make it a crucial text for understanding the intellectual ferment of the late 18th century. The forthcoming critical edition will further solidify Unzer’s place in literary history, ensuring that his contributions are recognized alongside those of his more celebrated contemporaries.
