研究成果概要

The purpose of this tokuteikadai project was to implement a novel computer algorithm developed by myself in the Japanese Meteorological Agencys (JMA) Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) Earth System Model. The JMAs MRI model is used to simulate future climate change and are an important contribution to the UNs International Panel on Climate Change report that informs policymakers worldwide. The algorithm greatly accelerates such models, saving a huge amount of time and energy and enabling new scientific capabilities. As part of this project, I helped Dr. Shogo Urakawa and other JMA scientists to successfully implement and test the algorithm in the MRI model. I also started a new collaboration with scientists at the Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) to implement the algorithm in their MIROC model, which also contributes to the IPCC report. Both the JMA and JAMSTEC plan to use the algorithm in their research and production simulations for the next IPCC report. A paper describing preliminary results from this project has been accepted for presentation at the Japan Geoscience Meeting in May 2025. Funding from this project was used to purchase supercomputing time on the Tokyo University Wisteria system to perform simulations, and for travel to meet and work with various collaborators on this project at the JMA, JAMSTEC, Tokyo University and Hyogo University. I want to note that I only recently moved to Japan and without funding from the tokuteikadai program it would not have been possible to make so much progress so quickly.
