There is a desire to make effective use of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, as a measure against global warming. Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide using excess renewable electricity has the potential to produce carbon dioxide-free chemicals without using high temperatures. However, there are limits to the reaction rate in terms of the supply of carbon dioxide in the electrolytic solution, so electrochemical reduction using carbon dioxide supplied from the gas phase is desired. In this study, in order to achieve a fast reaction rate for industrial use, we aimed to supply carbon dioxide from the gas phase, perform electrolysis at high current density, and determine the relationship between the products. We also investigated the issues involved in high current density operation. At high current densities of 200 mA/cm2 and 400 mA/cm2, we were able to obtain a high proportion of ethylene. However, as an issue, when operated for 2 hours, we observed electrolyte seeping into the gas phase. We also observed a rise in solution temperature. We will continue to optimize the catalyst layer in the future.
