- This project studied how unemployment insurance (UI) history affects job search intensity, job-finding outcomes, and macroeconomic variables. I documented that unemployed individuals with a history of UI receipt exhibit lower job search efficiency. Based on this, I constructed a corrected measure of aggregate search intensity, showing that failing to account for heterogeneous efficiency leads to underestimating matching efficiency (up to 18% during the Great Recession). Using a general-equilibrium model estimated via simulated method of moments, I found that UI extensions have smaller macro effects once efficiency is corrected. These findings inform optimal UI policy. A working paper has been presented internationally and will be submitted to a high-impact journal.
