研究成果概要

These are tentative findings: I used snowball sampling to interview one psychologist, one social association volunteer, and five managers in firms, to understand their perspectives on how people in Paris managed through and after the Coronavirus pandemic, and whether there had been lasting effects.

It appears that elderly people in particular were affected by the pandemic, not only by way of their increased mortality rate, but also, they seem to have been more affected by the fear of becoming ill. Their social circles have shrunk, and remain so, even now.

The use of the term ‘boomers’ pejoratively, illustrates a new perception that the older generation sacrificed the younger generations by the pandemic lockdown policy.

The pandemic was also extremely isolating for people who were incarcerated, as they were forbidden to have any visitors at all, and social activities in prisons were curtailed. Those with cognitive problems such as dementia also faced difficulties since they could not understand the reasons behind the regulations, and they fought against them.

The largest change in firms since COVID has been the allowance of teleworking two days per week. This continues for all non-manual, non-service workers.  It is very popular.
