研究成果概要

The long-term climate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in Japan is ambitious, with commentators deploring its "infeasibility" of it. Not only the technological and economic concerns, there are also barriers such as inadequate international mitigation efforts and the lack of long-term national strategies, which is particularly true for the industry sector. The industry sector is a hard-to-abate sector due to the high cost and long duration of infrastructures, with a lot of upstream sectors or energy consumption of industries still limited to one region. This context calls for research that reveals how global industry relocation may affect/contribute to the achievement of Japan’s carbon neutrality goal, while considering other social and environmental impacts to avoid making pollution havens outside and hollowing out employment inside.

We investigated the decarbonization pathways by 2070 by the model GCAM v6.0 (Global Change Analysis Model). The results have been summarized into a paper titled “Industry’s Role in Japan’s Energy Transition: Soft-Linking GCAM and National IO table with extended electricity supply sectors”. It is accepted by the journal Economic Systems Research.
