研究成果概要

To determine the extent of dependent use of the Internet and Internet games, researchers have used the length of "time of use" as an indicator to describe the problem. However, it is challenging to identify dependent use based solely on the duration of use because Internet use is not maladaptive. Conversely, as the Internet has become integral to individuals' professional lives, using "time of use" has produced results confusion between dependent Internet use and workaholism. Additionally, it can be inferred that the "compulsiveness" also influences the dependent use of the Internet and other media. This study examined the differences between dependent Internet use and workaholism regarding obsessive compulsiveness. The study included 171 participants (111 men and 60 women, mean age: 51.4±10.6 years) registered as monitors with a research company. The data analysis employed indices for measuring the severity of dependent Internet use and other sources, workaholism, and obsessive compulsiveness. The results indicate that on holidays, those with a high degree of dependent use of the Internet spend more time on the Internet, while those with a high degree of workaholism spend less time on the Internet. Noteworthy, compulsivity was shown to have a synergistic effect only on workaholism on weekdays.
