- Yet individuals may consider early retirement, and some organizations support this practice. We employed a mixed-method approach. First, we conducted a quantitative study based on a survey of academics approaching retirement age to identify their inclination regarding future retirement. We developed and tested a model using Structural Equation Modeling with data from 330 participants from various academic fields in Japan. We identified the critical roles of career orientation, work-life balance and perceived employability in the decision to continue working or retire early. Second, qualitative analysis of verbal responses from the participants shed light on the reasons for career satisfaction and inclination to continue working vs. retiring. This expands career theory to the realm of pre- and post-retirement age, with implications for individuals, employers and decision makers at the national level.
