研究成果概要
This research project examines contemporary Japanese women’s writings by exploring feminist visions of community as spatially represented in selected fictional works. Feminist scholars have pointed out the importance of “space” in considering gender relations and power, particularly the divide between the private intimacy of domestic spaces and public realms associated with prestige. The novels examined are filled with such gendered spaces—or women’s spaces, where men are largely absent. One could argue that these writers shine the spotlight on women to explore the complex philosophical questions of life and human character through their experiences and relationships, and not as a secondary counterpart to the male experience that has dominated literature. At the same time, these women’s spaces in the fictional works do not provide an easy, utopian vision of connection and solidarity, but rather, are presented as spaces of interrogation and sites of conflict. Research findings resulted in a peer-reviewed article and a conference presentation.
