This study aimed to examine the effects of adding a procedure to promote the transformation of generalized pliance as part of planning intervention methods for students who had difficulty in obtaining intervention effects. A total of 766 students (371 boys, 381 girls, and 14 others; mean age 13.3±1.0 years) in 21 classes at a public junior high school in the Kanto area were selected for the study. The students were divided into two groups: a standard group to acquire knowledge of functional thinking in addition to psychological education about stress, and an intervention group to promote discrimination between reality and thought. Results of the data analysis of generalized pliance, cognitive fusion, coping repertoire, stress response, and school adjustment showed that coping repertoire increased and cognitive fusion and stress response decreased with the stress management intervention, although there was no difference between the groups. The results also suggested that promotion of discrimination between reality and thought may be effective in reducing generalized pliance.
