- In this project the prototype of a chat bot was developed that learners of German at basic levels can use to practice dialog patterns. It is based on a database of speech act patterns and a specification language for dialogue patterns, both developed by the applicant.
In the course of the development, four major obstacles had to be overcome: (1) the recognition of the often non-standard utterances of students, (2) the reliable extraction of information from statements, (3) the recognition and handling of unexpected utterances, unrelated to the dialogue pattern, and (4) ensuring, that the communicative purpose of the dialogue pattern was achieved despite allowing for variation.
The prototype allows to practice a limited number of dialogue patterns in both formal and informal language. After completing the dialogue, the bot gives feedback on orthographic mistakes and hints on how to improve individual communicative turns.
