This study compared the force–velocity (F–V) characteristics between jump squat (JS) and weightlifting [clean (C) and high pull (HP)] to determine F‒V regions in the lower limb that are effectively targeted by weightlifting exercises. Eight weightlifters performed JS at 0%‒ 80% of their one-repetition maximum (1RM) for back squat, and C and HP at 30%‒90% and 30%‒100% of their 1RM for C, respectively. Averaged values of force and velocity at each relative load were plotted to determine the F–V characteristics of JS, C, and HP. Linear regression was applied to each subject’s JS F–V results to obtain individual F–V profiles. Regression equations were used to estimate JS force at a given velocity for each relative load of C and HP. C produced significantly lower force than JS at velocity values for loads of 30%‒50% and 80%‒90% 1RM, respectively. Also, HP produced a lower force at a velocity value for 30% 1RM with a moderate effect size and significantly lower force at velocity values for 80%‒100% 1RM than that produced by JS. C and HP produce comparable force with JS within certain velocity ranges, indicating that weightlifting targets a limited lower limb F–V profile portion.
