We document a positive effect of product market competition (PMC) on venture capital staged financing. The effect is more pronounced when firms are younger, operate in high-tech industries, or receive investments from irreputable and inexperienced VCs. We then find a joint positive impact between PMC and VC staging on the short-term and the long-term success of entrepreneurial firms.
