Amino acids have been used in medical field and food field. However, design condition of production process of the amino acid crystal is limited because most of the amino acids show polymorphism. In this study, polymorph control of L-Arginine hydrochloride and L-phenylalanine by ultrasonic irradiation was confirmed, and the mechanism of selective crystallization was discussed based on classical nucleation theory. The cavitation bubble, which was formed by ultrasonic vibration, was observed by high speed camera and digital camera. In addition, the concentration of bubbles was quantified by the camera images. The results suggest that higher output of ultrasonic irradiation would cause higher bubble concentration. Moreover, experiment of mL-scale crystallization was performed, and primary nucleation rate of each polymorph was observed to discuss the nucleation probability. The results indicate that the ultrasonication would induce the nucleation of particular form significantly, and nucleation probability was increased for several hours after the irradiation. Therefore, the surfaces of bubbles generated by ultrasonic vibration would be one of mechanisms of ultrasonic-induced nucleation. These results were reported at international conferences (BIWIC 2019 and APCChE 2019).
