研究成果概要

In this project the focus lay on typologically and theoretically important (morpho-)phonological phenomena in a number of Japanese dialects.

One part of the project consisted of an investigation of the roles of segmental and morphological structure in the accent and tone systems four different dialects: Tokyo Japanese, Matsue Japanese, Kanazawa Japanese, and Suzu Japanese. Taking data from these dialects as a starting point, a new theoretical approach to phonological strength in and beyond Japanese was developed. Although at the initial stage it was based on Autosegmental Phonology (Goldsmith 1976, 1990), it now draws more heavily on insights from Dependency Phonology (Anderson & Ewen 1987, Anderson 2011). Furthermore, attention was paid to making the approach largely compatible with Cognitive Linguistics.

Another part of the project consisted of the development of a cognitive-linguistic analysis of the accented-unaccented opposition in Japanese was developed. The analysis is based on the idea that a privative opposition can be seen as an instance of the basic asymmetry between a 'baseline' and 'elaboration' (Langacker 2016).

Summarizing, new analyses of phenomena related to the interaction between phonology and morphology in Japanese dialects were developed by combining insights from Autosegmental Phonology, Dependency Phonology, and Cognitive Linguistics.
