Title: Mediating the East Asian Olympics, 2018-2022 – Narratives and Counter-Narratives Report

This project gathered information about the central themes that the Anglo-American and Japanese English-language newspaper press have used and continue to use in discussing recent and future Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place in three East Asian countries. The project attempts to develop ideas first discussed by the P-I in an article in 2017 (J. Horne ‘Sports Mega-Events: Mass Media and Symbolic Contestation’, In L. A. Wenner & A. C. Billings Eds. (2017) Sport, Media and Mega-Events London: Routledge [pp. 19-32]). The project seeks to establish priorities for a larger research project to be conducted with Japanese and Korean colleagues into media communication and the 2018, 2020, and 2022 Olympic Games. The research methods used to date have been archival, documentary analysis, and qualitative content analysis of print and online newspaper media. The sample of newspapers included The Guardian (United Kingdom), The New York Times International Edition and The Japan Times.
