研究成果概要

By using the grant offered, I managed to Identify the main traits of women's activism in contemporary social movements. This research demonstrated the marginal role feminist coalitions play in raising the awareness of women in general and mothers in particular. By analyzing the strategies of each coalition (e.g., Mama no Kai, Mama Demo), the research demonstrated the main characteristics of women's activism in post 3.11 movements in Japan and how they managed to turn the platform of the movement into an egalitarian space where they called for their rights and recruited more women to stand against gender stereotypes that are deeply entrenched in the Japanese mindsets.

The study concludes that, through the inclusion of Women's coalitions in an environmental platform such as the anti-nuclear movement, they managed to change the political paradigm and create a new platform where they can exercise direct democracy against the male-dominated legislative bodies. Through their activism they created a new discourse where they normalized the culture of opposition. Consequently, women became motivated to join the movement regardless of the degree of their political consciousness, raising their voices to change the social structure of the Japanese society.
