- The aim of the research project was to investigate indicators of steganographic communication in natural language and to test computational methods for their automated detection. Steganograohic communication is a form of clandestine communication that hides a message in another message transmitted over an open channel in a way that no one apart from the intended recipient knows of the message's existence and content.
In an experiment pairs of subjects were requested to converse about a criminal plot but use a different subject area to negotiate the details of this plot. The experiment was conducted in a digital chat environment. 32 participants engaged in 16 dialogues with an overall wordcount of 17,000 words. These dialogues were then analyzed using categories from pragmatics and text linguistics. After tagging and annotating the corpora with additional semantic and pragmatic information available from external ressources, the categories found in the qualitative analysis were modeled.
