研究成果概要

In 18th century German literature, the South Seas, especially Tahiti, repeatedly has been referred to as an “exotic” or even “blissfull island”. Some years after Bougainville’s Voyage autour du monde and Forster’s Voyage around the World, several poems on the island in the South Seas were published (as by Zachariae and Bouterwek), and in a series of scholarly journals, excerpts and reviews of travel accounts were made available that sought to combine the descriptions of the islanders with general statements about human nature. In my research project I investigated the travel accounts published in journals or as monographs. At Berlin State Library, I studied articles published in journals like “Olla Potrida”, “Auserlesene Bibliothek der neuesten deutschen Litteratur” or “Chronologen”. On the other hand, I studied the first monographs on Tahiti, which have been overlooked by researchers for a long time, as for example Poncelin de la Roche-Tilhac’s History of Revolutions on Tahiti with a Description of the State Constitution, the Customs, Arts and Religion of its Inhabitants (1782), and Edouard Taitbout de Marigny’s Essai sur l’isle d’Otahiti (1772, germ. transl. 1783). While studying these texts on the background of Rousseaus’s philosophy and Diderot’s critical commentary on the Bougainville, I came to the conclusion that the discourse of Pacificism can be regarded in opposition to the Orientalism, as described by Edward Said.
