This project is to conduct research on how heroines of medieval setsuwa anecdotes were adapted into early modern popular theater and other popular genres. I mainly focus on demonic women depicted in anecdotes and how magical elements in the tales of religious miracles are rewritten into stories addressing tragic sacrifices in the human world. The result of my research was presented as “Rewriting Magic and Miracles in the Human World: Adaptations of Medieval Buddhist Tales in Early Modern Jōruri Puppet Theater” at The American Association of Teachers of Japanese 2018 Annual Spring Conference on March 22, 2018 in Washington D.C., USA.
