研究成果概要

In this study, the structure of learner EAP cause and effect essays was examined to determine the extent to which they successfully replicated an academic model studied beforehand.  The main focus centred on a detailed analysis of the rhetorical steps the learners had used to formulate their essays.   The freeware AntMover was trained with examples of particular steps, allowing comparison of the model text and the learner texts.  A discrepancy was found between the model and the learner texts, particularly in the number of claims learners were writing, amounting to over 60% of all steps (25% in the model) and the lack of supporting steps provided (32% compared to 65% in the model).  Further analysis showed that learners were attempting to provide support but because their writing lacked particular features (signposting words, specificity, anaphoric referencing and fully articulated cause and effect relationships), the result was often a consecutive series of loosely connected individual points.  The findings point to an issue with text cohesion and highlight an area for classroom intervention.
