The present study investigated the effect of a stress-management program focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability in the workplace context, considering individual differences in reinforcement sensitivity. Fifty-five employees from five workplaces participated in the study. The data of the final sample, which consisted of a group of usual stress-management (N = 17) and a group of stress-management focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability (N = 10), was subjected to the analysis. The effect of the stress-management focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability differed depending on individual levels of novelty-seeking, which is a tendency to prefer novel stimuli and rewards. In particular, while stress response significantly decreased in individuals with a low-level of novelty-seeking, stress response significantly increased in individuals with a high-level of novelty-seeking. The effect of the usual stress management was not observed, regardless of the individual levels of reinforcement sensitivity. These results suggest that stress-management focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability is not uniformly effective; thus, assessment of individual differences in reinforcement sensitivity is essential when we apply the program in workplaces.
