研究成果概要
In this research project, I examined the influence of Isadora Duncan’s early experiences on the formation of her new dance style and the cultural context of late nineteenth-century America. I researched materials that related to Isadora’s childhood as well as historical newspapers, magazines, and films.
In the latter half of the nineteenth century, millions of immigrants arrived in the United States. In the arts, a division developed between urban elite culture and working-class entertainment. Wealthy people enjoyed opera, while ordinary workers flocked to vaudeville. Most Americans viewed dance as a social amusement, not an art form. Ballet schools existed in the United States during this period; however, the form that was taught was more like theatrical dance.
Historical newspaper articles revealed that Isadora’s early performances mostly took place in wealthy women's private salons, rather than in theatres. Unhappy with the situation of the arts in the United States and the public's lack of appreciation of her dance as an art form, Isadora eventually moved to London.
I presented a research paper entitled “Isadora Duncan’s Early Career in the United States,” at the Society of Dance History Scholars and the Congress on Research in Dance’s Joint Conference (2015) in Athens, Greece.
