This research project aims to provide an indoor service using hybrid optical wireless and radio communication. In this project, the optical communication is used to get the position information and control channel signal of the mobile terminal. Normally, photo diode is used for VLC system. In this project, instead of using photo diode, image sensor is chosen for receiving light signal since image sensor is able to spatially separate optical signals and other light noise. LED arrays, which can enable optical MIMO schemes, are used to increase the data rate. Experiments are carried out to demonstrate this MIMO system using 6×6 LEDS and COMS image sensor as a receiver. In order to detect LED array from the serial photos taken by image sensor, two algorithms are proposed Connected Component Labeling based LED array detection (CCLD) and Hough Transform based LED array Detection (HTD). In the LED array, 4 LEDs are Flag-LEDs, which are used for finding the start LED and decoding the LED array. CCLD and HTD algorithms are compared and the results show that CCLD is more suitable for our system. Moreover, an efficient data-traffic scheduling and radio resource allocation scheme is studied in this project.
