研究成果概要
The aims of our studies were to investigate the physical properties, association of muscle-tendon unit and physical activity functions, and their individual variations in elderly populations. To establish the methodology of the present study, we have performed the fundamental experiments on young populations focusing on the skeletal muscle hardness-length relationship and the functional roles of fascia by muscle contraction. Furthermore, the shoe insole possessing high bending stiffness was designed in order to improve the locomotive abilities. In addition, we performed a cross-sectional study on 210 participants of different ages to investigate the association between skeletal muscle properties and physical functions in relation to aging. A significant correlation between maximal walking speed and leg extension power was observed. It was concluded that for the improvement of locomotive abilities, leg extension power is important for the elderly. We are planning to reveal the relationship between skeletal muscle mass and locomotion abilities of elderly populations.
